Any hollow sections of the chassis steel work which cannot be protectively coated need to be plugged to stop the section rusting from the inside out.

The BS3632:2015 standard to which a Park Home should be constructed includes a normative standard known as  ISO 12944.  A normative standard is one to which the first standard refers and is to be taken to be a normal part of the first standard.  The reference out to the second standard avoids having to repeat the requirements of the second standard wholly within the first.  This allows both standards to be maintained separately whilst allowing them to be used together in their joint implementation.

The relevance of the ISO 12944 standard is that it refers to the requirements for the correct supply of the chassis which is the main structural component of a mobile home.  It is on the chassis that the whole construction relies upon for its rigidity, stability, mobility and longevity.

As the chassis is constructed of Steel it is clearly subject to the possibility of the formation of Rust. Depending on the location of the site on which the park home is stationed, for example near the coast, the rust formation will be rapid if the chassis is not protected in accordance with the requirements contained in the ISO 12944 standard.

It is not the intention to detail the specification here but to summarise the key elements which the specification addresses.  In particular it recognises that different manufacturing approaches which might rely on many and varied Steel profiles, will require differing treatments accordingly.  This is also true where, as mentioned above, the location of the mobile home will present the opportunity for deterioration to be accelerated.

In this case the chassis pictured is seen to have a square hollow box section the internal surfaces of which are difficult to protectively coat successfully without significant cost being incurred to the manufacturer.  Here though should the steel section fail due to it being unprotected, the resultant cost to the home owner might be the total loss of the home.
